Title: WORM compliant storage on the cloud
Post by: B.Rivers on November 02, 2017, 04:47:41 PM
Hello,   ???

Currently we are running CMOD 9.0.0.7 and we use both Cache/SAN storage and WORM (Write Once Read Many) storage from EMC/DELL.  We use Windows DB2/TSM to connect to the EMC\DELL WORM storage.  We are looking to change to WORM compliant storage on the cloud.  Has anyone done this conversion and was it successful?

Thanks,

Brian

This response is *purely* my opinion...

It's possible but unlikely.  The problem with WORM devices is...  What if you stop paying?  If you store a document that needs to be retained for 10 years, then stop paying after the first month...  Then what?  The vendor can't reclaim or re-use that space for 10 years if their system is a WORM solution.  That's way too risky!  They'd have to charge you up front for a decade's worth of storage, and pre-paying for that doesn't make sense from a financial perspective -- because the biggest benefit to the cloud is paying month-to-month.

The other snag is that you're outsourcing responsibility for something that may cost your company millions-to-billions in fines if your WORM service provider goes bankrupt or somehow loses your data.

For something so absolutely critical and central to the business, you're better off managing and maintaining this yourself.

Thank for the candid opinion.  Just what I needed.
