issue connecting CMOD to SQL database on another server

Hello,
We have been working with IBM to do a new install of CMOD v9 on one of our virtual servers. For reasons I won't bother getting into the database is installed on a second virtual server. We are able to get the CMOD install as far as attaching to the SQL db and that's where it quits. We have validated ID's and passwords etc. We have both our security and server teams checking to ensure that it's not something to do with GPO's etc. BTW the boxes are Server 2012 and SQL 2010. Any one else had a similar issue in a similar configuration ?
