PDF indexing

I have a series of different letters with different content that my users want to index on the filename only.  I have an exit that will pull the filename into the section id but I can't seem to get it to work without creating a trigger, a field and an index that I don't really need.  Is there a way to force it or am I doing this all wrong?   

For now, I have created 7 different applications to accommodate the differences in the letters.  I would rather do just one.

I think what you want to do is index by the PDF Metadata, specifically the title.
