Blank "Displayed Value"

When creating an application group I would like to have a blank "Displayed Value" mapping.  These are created on the "Field Information" tab when created an Application Group.  I have Database/Displayed values that convert state names to the 2 digit state abbreviations but have a few values that are not state names to have a blank value.  Does anyone know if this is possible?  An error indicating the field is required pops up if I try to leave it blank or just put a space in the field.

That's an interesting question!  I tried it too -- looks like it's not possible to have blanks.  This is an odd case where even though a space IS a value, it's not considered one.  And if you don't put an entry, you'll see the database value.  What about putting 2 underscores or hypens instead?
