Before upgrading to DB2 9.7, READ THIS:

There is a bug in db2ckupgrade.  It doesn't throw an alert when you have the XML Extender installed.  The XML Extender was included by default in previous versions of DB2, and is now unsupported in DB2 9.7.  Of course, this bug doesn't show up until after you've upgraded the database instance -- making recovery that much harder.  We had to blow away everything (database, instance, db directories) and start with a new instance, restore, rollforward, THEN start over again.  I'll post the message from db2diag.log to make it more search-engine-friendly when I get back on that system.

Before upgrading your database instance, follow the instructions in this technote, even if you don't use XML, and all the queries come back with 0 rows:

Thanks Justin. As it happens we are planning the upgrades to DB2 V9.7. I will pass this info on to the decision makers.
